Supporters praise Cwtch Mawr’s £27.7m impact in Swansea

Faith in Families’ Cwtch Mawr Multibank has transformed Swansea in its first year – redistributing 470,000 essential items and generating £27.7 million in social value, according to an independent evaluation. For every £1 invested, the Multibank creates £5.90 of value for families and communities.

Launched in March 2024, Cwtch Mawr is led by Faith in Families, and co-created with Amazon as part of the UK-wide Multibank initiative. The project is made possible by the backing of businesses, government and charitable foundations – and now, supporters are sharing why they believe Cwtch Mawr matters so much.

Beacon Cymru

Serena Jones, Executive Director of Operations, said:

“Our vision at Beacon is better places for people and the planet and this motivated our initial investment in Cwtch Mawr and our increased financial support in 2025/26. This report proves that compassion delivers returns. For every £1 invested, we’ve seen £5.90 in social value created in the areas both of our organisations work: this is real, positive impact in people’s lives; it is the epitome of change you can see.

Crucially for Beacon, Cwtch Mawr isn’t just tackling poverty, it’s tackling waste, which is an epidemic in the modern, western world. By diverting over 120 tonnes of goods from landfill, it’s not just proving that social impact and sustainability go hand in hand, it’s reinforcing that they are, at the heart of it, one and the same. Cwtch Mawr is circular economy in action, with dignity at its heart.”

Moondance Foundation

Diane Briere de l’Isle Engelhardt OBE, Patron of Cwtch Mawr and Chairperson of the Moondance Foundation, added:

“At Moondance, we believe in practical compassion – helping people with dignity and empowering communities to thrive. Cwtch Mawr embodies this. It is providing essentials with respect, tackling poverty and waste together, and proving what can be achieved when charities, business and government work hand in hand.
As Patron, I am proud to support Faith in Families in leading this work. The £27.7m of value created in the first year shows that Cwtch Mawr is more than a project – it is a movement for change in Swansea and beyond.”

Welsh Government

Mark Drakeford, former First Minister of Wales, said:

“Cwtch Mawr is that rare thing in social policy – a service in which everyone is a winner. This Report demonstrates how it has outperformed original expectations right across the range of relevant indicators. Poverty can erupt suddenly into the lives of people who never expected to be in that position – through illness, losing a job or the breakup of a relationship. For others poverty is an insidious process, built up over a long time of having to manage without enough to meet life’s needed. Cwtch Mawr can, and does, help in either circumstance, blending practical action with a never-absent respect for human dignity. As a member of the Welsh Government I am very pleased that we have been a supporter, from the earliest stages. Now on to even greater success in the future.”

Faith in Families

Cherrie Bija, CEO of Faith in Families, said:

“Cwtch Mawr proves what’s possible when businesses, government and communities pull together. We’ve shown that surplus goods can change lives – children going to school with confidence, families able to redirect their money to heating and food, people treated with dignity when times are tough. With nearly £28m in value created in just one year, the impact far outweighs the investment. Thanks to our partners and funders, Swansea is leading the way in tackling poverty with innovation – and we’re only just getting started.”
