Cherrie Bija Wins Director of the Year Award

We’re proud to share that Cherrie Bija winner of the IoD Wales Director of the Year Awards 2026 in the Public and Third Sector category.

This is a huge moment for Faith in Families. It recognises leadership that is making a real difference to children and families across Swansea Bay, and highlights the importance of community-led support at a time when it is needed most.

A national award recognising leadership

The Institute of Directors (IoD) is a leading organisation for directors across the UK and beyond, focused on developing strong leadership and good governance. Their Director of the Year Awards celebrate individuals who are driving positive change within their organisations and communities.

To be shortlisted was already a significant achievement. However, to be named winner, among such strong finalists, reflects the impact and influence of Cherrie’s leadership.

Cherrie Bija winner – leadership that reaches beyond the organisation

As CEO of Faith in Families, Cherrie has led the growth of services that support children and families experiencing poverty, trauma, and crisis.

Across Community Cwtches, families find safe spaces, connection, and support without judgement. Through Cwtch Mawr Multibank, families access essential items with dignity during times of crisis. Together, these services create both immediate relief and long-term change.

However, this award is not just about services. It reflects a way of leading.

Cherrie’s approach is rooted in relationships, trust, and understanding. Because of this, families feel able to reach out, often for the first time. In turn, this creates stronger foundations for children to feel safe, supported, and valued.

A team effort behind the recognition

While Cherrie has been recognised as the winner, this moment belongs to the whole organisation.

Faith in Families is powered by a team who show up every day, across Community Cwtches, outreach work, and Cwtch Mawr Multibank. Their work, alongside volunteers and partners, turns vision into action.

Strong leadership creates the conditions for impact. However, it is collective effort that makes change happen.

Speaking after receiving the award, Cherrie said:

This award means so much, but it doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to every single person who makes Faith in Families what it is, our team, our volunteers, and our partners who show up every day for children and families.Everything we do is for the families we support now, and for those we haven’t met yet. Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported, and this recognition is a reminder of why that work matters so much.

Why this matters for families

This recognition shines a light on the importance of early support and community connection.

Children and families facing hardship need more than short-term solutions. They need consistent support, trusted relationships, and services that understand their experiences. That is what Faith in Families continues to provide.

As a result, this award is not just about leadership. It is about the difference being made every day across Swansea Bay.
