Shark Dive Hero | At just ten years old, Buddy Martin has proved that age is no barrier to making a difference. This fearless young fundraiser has successfully completed his unforgettable adventure—diving with sharks at the Blue Planet Aquarium—to raise money for Faith in Families, a charity dedicated to supporting children and families across Swansea Bay.
Buddy’s journey to this thrilling challenge had its fair share of setbacks. Originally planned as a birthday celebration last October, his much-anticipated Shark Dive was postponed twice. But on Saturday, 15th February 2025, third time truly was the charm! Buddy took the plunge alongside his brother Caiden, bravely swimming among 5ft Black Tip Reef Sharks, Zebra Bullhead Sharks, Moray Eels, and Southern Stingrays.
Reflecting on his experience, Buddy, a student at Whitestone Primary School, shared:
“It was amazing! I was a little nervous at first, but once I was in the water, it was incredible to be so close to the sharks. I’m really proud that I could do this to help other children. Faith in Families does such important work, and I hope people keep donating!”
Faith in Families provides crucial support to children and families facing poverty, crisis, and hardship across Swansea Bay. Through their Community Cwtches and Wales’ first-ever Multibank, the charity delivers essential services, including therapy for children, parental support, outreach work, and home assistance. In 2024 alone, they distributed 140,000 care packages, offering a lifeline to families in need.
Buddy’s school is also celebrating his achievement. Bethan Peterson, Headteacher at Whitestone Primary School, said:
“We are all so proud of Buddy. His courage and generosity are inspirational to us all; his classmates, staff and the wider community. He has set a fantastic example of how young people can make a big impact.”
Cherrie Bija, CEO of Faith in Families, expressed her admiration for Buddy’s incredible efforts:
“Buddy is an inspiration to us all. His determination and kindness show just how much of a difference one young person can make. Every penny he raises will help us continue our work in supporting families in crisis, and we are so grateful to him and everyone who donates.”
Although Buddy has now completed his Shark Dive challenge, his fundraising efforts continue! Every donation, big or small, will help Faith in Families continue their life-changing work.
