Free Student Essentials
Now available to learners at Gower College Swansea, thanks to a new partnership between the College and Faith in Families’ Cwtch Mawr Multibank.
Students at the Tycoch Campus can now visit Y Siop to access brand-new toiletries, clothing, bags and other useful items, completely free of charge.
For us, though, this partnership is about much more than the items on the shelves.
It is about making sure support reaches people where they already are, in a way that feels welcoming, discreet and without judgement.
Because when everyday essentials become unaffordable, the impact can reach far beyond the household budget.
Why Free Student Essentials Matter
The cost of everyday life continues to place pressure on young people and families.
Something as simple as toiletries, a new bag or essential clothing can become another expense to worry about. When money is already stretched, people are forced to make difficult choices.
That can affect confidence, wellbeing and even someone’s experience of education.
No student should have to sit in a classroom worrying about whether they can afford shampoo, deodorant or the clothing they need.
That is why free student essentials can make such a difference.
Through Cwtch Mawr, brand-new surplus goods from businesses are given a new purpose. Instead of good-quality items going unused, they reach people who can genuinely benefit from them.
However, we know we cannot reach everyone alone.

Partnerships help us reach further
Cwtch Mawr is Wales’ first and only multibank. It collects brand-new surplus goods from businesses and distributes them through a network of more than 160 trusted partner organisations.
Partnerships are vital!
Schools, colleges, charities and community organisations already know the people they support. They understand their communities, and they often have trusted relationships already in place.
So, rather than asking someone to find another service or travel somewhere unfamiliar, we can take support closer to them.
The new free student essentials offer at Gower College Swansea is a great example.
Learners can access support through Y Siop at Tycoch, somewhere that is already part of College life. The aim is simple: make essential items easy to access and remove as much stigma as possible.

Giving goods a purpose, and students an opportunity
There is another part of this partnership that we particularly love.
Y Siop will be staffed by students from the College’s Independent Living Skills department.
As they help run the shop, learners will gain practical experience in customer service, communication, organisation, teamwork and stock management.
So, the project is doing two things at once.
It is providing free student essentials to the wider College community, while also helping ILS learners build confidence and transferable skills for their own futures.
That combination of practical support and opportunity sits closely with what we believe at Faith in Families.
Support should meet an immediate need, but wherever possible it should also help create confidence, connection and opportunity.
Cwtch Mawr is about more than boxes

A bag might mean a student can arrive at College feeling prepared.

Cwtch Mawr collects new surplus goods from partners including Amazon and other businesses, then sorts and redistributes them responsibly through trusted organisations.
That approach also keeps good-quality products in active use, rather than allowing useful items to go to waste.

For us, this is the bigger story.
When charities, education providers, businesses and communities work together, we can reach far more people.
