Today is the International Day of Play, a global celebration of something every child deserves: the opportunity to play, explore, imagine and simply be a child.
The importance of play for children is often underestimated. Many people see play as something fun to fill spare time. However, play is far more than entertainment. It helps children learn, build confidence, develop friendships and understand the world around them.
At Faith in Families, we see the power of play every single day.

For children experiencing poverty, trauma, anxiety or difficult life circumstances, opportunities to play can sometimes be limited. When families are worried about paying bills, putting food on the table or coping with a crisis, play can become an unaffordable luxury.
Yet childhood should not be put on hold because life is difficult.
That is why play is such an important part of the support we provide across our projects.

The Importance of Play for Children
Play is one of the most important ways children learn and develop.
Through play, children build confidence, improve communication skills and learn how to manage emotions. They develop creativity, problem-solving skills and resilience. Most importantly, play allows children to experience joy.
Research from organisations such as UNICEF highlights that play is essential for healthy childhood development and wellbeing. It helps children build social skills, process experiences and develop the confidence they need as they grow.
You can learn more about this on the UNICEF website: https://www.unicef.org/parenting/child-development/learning-through-play
For some children, play is also a way of expressing feelings that are difficult to put into words.
That is why creating opportunities for children to play is not simply a nice extra. It is a vital part of helping children thrive.

How Faith in Families Uses Play Every Day
Play runs through so much of what we do.
In our Community Cwtches, children learn through play while parents and carers build friendships and support networks. From messy play sessions and creative activities to singing, storytelling and outdoor adventures, these experiences help children develop confidence while creating lasting memories.
Our Brighter Futures team regularly uses therapeutic play to help children understand and express their emotions. Sometimes children communicate more through play than they ever could through conversation alone. Through carefully planned activities, children can explore feelings, build trust and develop emotional resilience in a safe environment.
Meanwhile, our Inspiring Futures project supports parents and carers to build brighter futures for themselves and their families. When parents gain confidence, skills and opportunities, children benefit too.
Even through Cwtch Mawr Multibank and our Cwtch Cubbies, play makes a difference. Toys, games and children’s items are regularly redistributed to families who may otherwise struggle to access them. These seemingly simple items create moments of joy, imagination and childhood.

Every Child Deserves the Chance to Play
The importance of play for children goes beyond games and activities.
Play helps children feel included.
Play helps children build confidence.
Play helps children process experiences and emotions.
Play helps children develop the skills they need for life.
Most importantly, play allows children to be children.
Today, on the International Day of Play, we are celebrating every game, every giggle, every messy activity, every imaginative adventure and every safe space where children can simply enjoy being children.
Because every child deserves the chance to play.
Together, we can help create more opportunities for children to learn, grow, play and thrive.
Bringing Play to Life With Our Partners
Together, we helped bring fun into our Community Cwtches, creating moments where children could simply enjoy being children. There were games, activities, smiles, and the kind of joyful chaos that reminds us why the importance of play for children can never be underestimated.

This year, we want to do even more.
We would love to work with businesses, partners and supporters who want to help bring play, creativity and joy into local communities. Whether that is through funding activities, donating toys or resources, volunteering time, or helping us create unforgettable experiences for children and families, your support can make a real difference.
Because play is not just about having fun, it is about confidence, connection, belonging and childhood memories that last.
